Antigua is the ideal place from which to launch tours. Visits to surrounding volcanoes, Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango, Mayan Indian villages, Tikal and Copan Mayan archeological ruins, and other sites near and far in Guatemala are easily arranged. Antigua Guatemala, is a charming place to live or visit. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it was Guatemala’s Spanish colonial capital until an earthquake in 1773 damaged or destroyed many of its buildings. A rigorous commitment to preserve the city’s heritage has made Antigua one of Central America’s top tourist destinations.
